Peter Dowell (John was Peters grandfathers brother) submitted: John originated from a seafaring Shetland family and came out to NZ with his father John Dowell Snr in 1904 on a schooner called the Privateer. Peter has extensive information on the Dowell's and the vessels they served on throughout NZ waters from approximately 1900-1950. John Dowell's tombstone was erected in Tumbledown Bay after his body was found washed ashore, and still remains on the beach at Tumbledown Bay.
